Here’s the formula:
For a win, one point for each opponent’s victories- I-AA teams count for half. For a loss, lose one point for each opponent’s loss- all teams.
For a win by more than 21 points, one half extra point for each opponent’s victory (1-A teams only)
For a loss by more than 21 points, loss one half extra point for each opponent’s loss (All teams)
For a road win, one extra point.
If a team defeats another team and has the same or a better record, they can’t be ranked below the losing team.
All right, Alabama fell to Texas A&M over the weekend. So why are they still #1? Quality wins over quality opponents built up enough of a margin to keep them ahead of #2 Oregon.
27 point win over 7 win Michigan.
35 point win over 6 win Western Kentucky.
31 point blowout over 7 win Mississippi State.
In the same vein that it was unfair for pollsters et al to drop Houston as far as they did last year and totally negate their total body of work, you could make the same case for Alabama instead of subscribing to the NASCAR ‘restrictor plate’ methad of ranking teams and simply moving up the next teams in line and dropping a team after it loses a game. Alabama’s 9 wins have come against teams totalling 48 wins. Up until last week’s four point win over LSU, the Crimson Tide had won all but one game (Mississippi) by more than 21 points.
What may eventually drop the Crimson Tide down is upcoming games against 0-9 Western Carolina and 2-8 Auburn vs. #2 Oregon’s 8 win Stanford showdown next weekend and 7 win Oregon State the week after. #3 Notre Dame: Wake Forest (5-5) and USC (7-3).
Georgia jumps to #4 and Florida #5, ahead of Kansas State at #6. Ohio State is #7 while Texas A&M moves up to #8 and the ACC tandem of #9 Florida State and #10 Clemson jump into the top 10.
